Ever Try Explaining SEO to Someone Who Has Never Heard of it?
I have worked in the SEO industry for 7 years this coming February. To this day there is not a soul I try to explain my job description to that gets it right away. If I told you I was a brick layer, you would know I laid bricks. If I told you I work at Dunkin Donuts, behind the counter you may ask for a deal if you were close enough. Point is that working in SEO is not the easiest to get across to people.
What is SEO stand for? Search Engine Optimization.
- Oh, you work on Google or Yahoo?
- No, we try to help company websites get some love from the search engines like Yahoo, Google and others. When you search for safety glasses we are looking to have our client that sells safety glasses be at the top of the list you initially see when searching on Yahoo, Google or Bing. There are the sponsored ads/listings you see and then there are the natural listings below those.
I had someone swear he knew what Search Engine Optimization was. He totally spaced out on “Search Engine” and swore I optimized networks and different types of databases. At some point I agreed all the way and got out of there.
Some may read this and think, “What kind of people is he dealing with?” Unless you have something scripted and ready for the Average Joe most just don’t get it.
I will say,
Have you ever used Google or Yahoo to search for something using their search bar?
Most say “Yes” and I ask them about the list they see after submitting their search. I mention how we try and get our clients to the top of the list you see so that hopefully you click on their website before the competition. When they ask about what exactly I do I change the conversation and move along.
If you work in the industry and explained SEO perfect enough the 1st time they had no questions for you, you are the best. I would say that they got bored and wanted to get out of there but who am I to judge. Get in touch with me if you have your own version of events maybe at a bar trying to explain SEO to somebody.
For those wondering… I handle link popularity duties for dozens of websites in various industries. I am also webmaster, and developer for countless SEO client websites. I develop blogs, set up all major shopping cart, ecommerce, CMS and blog platforms. The list goes on. You know how it is.
Being I am in the industry I have this website and a few others For the Little Guy. Money is tight for many. Links still play a major role in the way websites are listed. (my opinion) Why not get some good links from websites optimized to help, not hinder your placement. Explaining SEO to just anybody is not the coolest. Helping webmasters and website owners attain quality links for useful keywords is.

Facebook Slowing Down? Surprised?
Facebook is a behemoth to it’s old self just 12 months ago. Why are the account numbers such a big thing for? Most of us know that a big chunk of the 700 million users the media throws out there are double, triple and many times over for business and pleasure alike among the user population. How many of those accounts are “deleted” accounts.. The deleted account where if you input your original account information all of your information is magically available to you like you never left.
The point of that has to do with the question I have; are those “deleted” accounts part of the overall number? That can seem a bit far-fetched but not out of the realm of things these days. Losing the numbers in Canada and here in the USA is not a surprise. As they say, “Pressure busts pipes…”, this Facebook slowing down drama was bound to come as it did to many including AOL, Yahoo, MSN/Bing and many others.
I saw somewhere a blogger gave them 3 years to bust. If you were an investor would the recent revelations effect your judgement on the investment? “No way Jose!”. Zuckerberg is going to walk away a billionaire any way we look at it if the IPO thing goes through next year.
$100,000,000,000 sound good to you? That is 100 billion dollars you get from those 12 numbers. I personally don’t see it but am not a big follower. I don’t even have a Facebook account but know that anyone involved with those types of numbers is going to become a very wealthy man or woman.
I say “Good Luck” to Facebook and those involved. I am not a big fan of Mark Zuckerberg but must say he bumped into a gold, platinum and everything else mine. For those with accounts and those looking to start an account; do so at your own risk and pay attention to your privacy/security settings. It is too easy to have your life altered by what someone may see on Facebook.
The numbers may be slowing down but businesses, entrepreneurs, bands, artists, entertainers, poets and everyone else on Facebook with a purpose (which is 10s of millions probably worldwide) will keep them going. Their Facebook ads, business pages, Facebook marketing, custom apps, their growing web search functions and many other growing and soon to be released functions they should be able to keep their stranglehold on social media for years to come.

YES, I do work in the SEO industry and YES I am going to talk about the company I work for but I will not mention the name of the company I work for. As in real life, bad news always gets more attention than the good news. I deal with countless companies dealing in “black hat” tactics and can care less about the overall negative impact their tactics can have on a website rather than what results they are able to show within 3 months. Remember there is never a guarantee in SEO.
Good search engine optimization companies are not all of the companies you contact. Be sure to pay attention, find out what they offer, how much work is going to be done for your money and are they in it for the long haul. Make sure they listen to you. If you can’t speak to the owner from the beginning of the sales process he probably doesn’t care as much.

I received an email recently to this blog and was asked to write a post about a website; not your average website. Nowitscheaper.com is a place on the web I do believe all of us should be checking out for great savings in the UK along with freebie offers and tips to keep more money in your pocket rather than in another’s. From what I saw the best place to be on the site is within their forum. At the top of the main page there are a few affiliate ads going on but not enough to force us to click something nor sore on the eyes. I love video games. I am more into console game but know many who can appreciate those cool flash games that are all over the place. Their selection comes from ’mochimedia’, check them out.
It doesn’t seem their following is too big yet, just as well it seems the site was started in the past couple of months. Give them a little time, you check them out and tell your buddy to check them out. You have the opportunity to offer your own deals as well I am sure.
